Insert menu

Select an object to insert into the document. After you have selected the object to insert, you must click and drag out the object on the Document, Page or Story view. In the Story view, you can only insert the object inline with the rest of the Story content.

 

Text	Adds a text object (no overflow enabled). See Text.
Story Frame	Adds a Story frame. See Story frames.
Image	Opens the Insert Image dialog, where you can browse for a file or a Design Center resource. When you click OK, you must drag out the image on the Document or Page view. See Overlays and images.
Chart	Opens the Create Chart wizard. When you have specified the design of the chart, you must drag out the chart on the Document or Page view. See Charts.
Barcode	Adds a default barcode. You can modify the barcode by editing the Barcode properties in the Properties panel. See Barcodes.
Fragment > Overlay	Opens the Insert Fragment dialog, where you can browse for a file or a Design Center resource. When you click OK, you must drag out the overlay on the Document or Page view. If you insert the overlay in the Story view, the overlay of default size is added at the insertion point. See Overlays and images.
Fragment > Dynamic	As overlay, but the Fragment can contain dynamic content depending on input data.
Fragment > Content Dependent	As static fragment, but the Fragment can contain dynamic content that depends on what is rendered in other parts of the document. For example, a Page m of n text in a page header that depends on how many pages the document consists of. Or, a table of contents that depends on which pages different parts of the document start on.
Fragment > Multipage	As overlay, but it optimizes for a multiple page overlay where all pages are loaded only once. You can reference to individual pages of this multi page overlay from different locations in the document, by specifying the Page ID in the Fragment properties.
New Fragment > Overlay	Adds a new overlay.
New Fragment > Dynamic	Adds a new fragment that can contain dynamic content.
New Fragment > Content Dependent	Adds a new Fragment that can contain content that depends on other document content.
New Fragment > Page Number	Adds a new Fragment with a page number substitution predefined.
New Fragment > Page of Pages	Adds a new Fragment with a Page m of n substitution predefined.
Table	Opens the Insert Table dialog. See Insert Table dialog.
Line	Adds a line. See Drawing tools.
Rectangle	Adds a rectangle. See Drawing tools.
Ellipse	Adds an ellipse. See Drawing tools.
Free Form	Adds a free form. See Drawing tools.
Curve	Adds a curve. See Drawing tools.
Story	Adds a new Story to the Stories panel.
Substitution	Opens the Data Selection dialog. See Data selection dialog. When you click OK, you must drag out the substitution on the Document, Page or Story view. See also Adding Message fields and variables.
Section	Adds a Composition Center Section. See Adding Composition Center Sections.
Substitution Type	Add a substitution of the selected type.
Story Reference	Adds a Story reference to a Story. See Re-using content within a document.
Switch	Adds a Switch for selecting Stories in runtime. See Selecting content within a document dynamically.
Case	Adds a Case to a Switch. See Selecting content within a document dynamically.
Default Case	Adds a default Case to a Switch. See Selecting content within a document dynamically.
Page	Inserts a new page at the end of the document.
Page Group	Adds a new group for page links at the end of the document.
Unlinked Page	Adds a page that is not yet linked to the document. Either the Pages panel or the Page view must be selected to add an unlinked page. To include the page in the document, you must create a link to the page. See Linking pages.
Link > Page Link	Opens the Select Page for Link dialog. See Select Page for Link dialog.
Link > Story Link	Adds a Story link to a selected Story frame or shape.
Link > Link	Adds a hyperlink.
Interactive objects > Text	Adds an interactive object of type single-line text. In the Properties panel, select which Text type it is to be used (Text, Number, Email, Password, Telephone or URL).
Interactive objects > Multiline text	Adds an interactive object of type multi-line text.
Interactive objects > Check box	Adds an interactive object of type check box.
Interactive objects >Drop down	Adds an interactive object of type drop-down list.
Interactive objects > Button	Adds an interactive object of type button.
Interactive objects > Radio button	Adds an interactive object of type radio button.
Interactive objects > Hidden	Adds an interactive object of type hidden.
Interactive objects > File	Adds an interactive object of type File.
Interactive objects > Listbox	Adds an interactive object of type List box.
Command > Area Break	In text editing mode, inserts an area break. This means that any content following the area break is rendered in the next placeholder. (Optionally, use Ctrl + Enter)
Command > Line Break	In text editing mode, inserts a line break (same as Shift key + Enter key).
Command > Column Section	Below this command within a Story you can enable columns and optionally balance them. See Editing text.
Special characters	In text editing mode, opens the Special characters dialog, see Special Characters dialog.
Import Objects	Opens the Import Objects dialog, see Import Objects dialog.
