Adding external content

You can insert substitutions referencing external content such as StoryTeller Stories or RTF, XHTML, and LXF files. By referencing a StoryTeller Story you can re-use Stories defined in other StoryTeller documents.

Not all of the official XHTML and RTF specification is supported. For XHTML support, see XHTML filter support.

There are two substitution types you can use for referencing external content:

External content

The referenced content is loaded the first time the Process uses it, meaning that the content can not change during runtime. If the referenced content is a StoryTeller document, it must contain at least one Story.

If you have specified name on one or more Stories, you can select which Story to use, either statically or dynamically through property modification.

If you do not specify a Story name or variable for the substitution, the first Story in the list of available Stories in the referenced StoryTeller document is used.

Note:

The Character style specified for the substitution does not affect the substituted content.

Repository

The referenced document is loaded for every request. This can not be used for referencing StoryTeller documents and their Stories, but must be used when the content retrieved can be different for every call to the substitution. For example, to retrieve generated data unique to each recipient of the documents.

The Section object is a Repository substitution with a prefix to the URI to identify it as Composition Center content. This prefix (strssec:) is automatically added when you use the Section object.

Note:

The Character style set on the substitution is used as default for the substituted content.

By leaving the Sample data field empty, the content of the referenced data is displayed in design time. (Delete the <Empty> text).

To add an External content substitution

1	In the Document, Page, or Story view, right-click the position to add the substitution and select Insert > Substitution Type > External content. The Open StoryTeller file dialog opens.

2	Browse to the file and click Open.

3	For StoryTeller documents, select the Story to use in the Properties panel Data category Story name field, or add a property modification on the Story. See Selecting external content dynamically.

To add a Repository substitution

1	In the Document, Page, or Story view, right-click the position to add the substitution and select Insert > Substitution Type > Repository. The Open StoryTeller file dialog opens.

2	Browse to the file and click Open.
